Peak Design Phone Bike Mount and More!

In 2020, I had the opportunity to review Peak Design during its Kickstarter campaign, which featured a phone case, bike mount, and various accessories. I was impressed with the quality engineering, durability, and extensive product offering back then, and I continue to be impressed now.

Recently, their marketing team provided me with a selection of their latest and existing products for testing and review:

Out Front Bike Mount V2

Everyday Phone Case

Mobile Tripod

Stand Wallet

You can find the entire Peak Design product line on the company’s website and Amazon.

Exceptional Customer Engagement

Peak Design excels at maintaining excellent communication with its customers. They inform buyers about their order status through timely emails, provide helpful links to instructional videos, and actively seeks customer feedback with their “How Did We Do?” surveys.

During my testing, I had a question about the durability of the Universal Adaptor adhesive when using a third-party phone case with the Out Front Bike Mount. Using the company’s website chat function, I immediately connected with a live person (or an excellent AI) who answered my questions quickly and professionally. This level of customer service reflects Peak Design’s overall commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

Commitment to Sustainability

The company stands out for its environmental initiatives. Peak Design is entirely carbon neutral across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 and proudly participates as a founding member of Climate Neutral. Additionally, they contribute 1% of their revenue to environmental nonprofits as part of their commitment to 1% For The Planet. Their status as a Certified B Corporation further underscores their dedication to high social and environmental performance standards, transparency, and accountability.

Innovative Design: Out Front Bike Mount V2 – Launched January 2024

4.5 stars

Price: $69.95

Fits round handlebar diameter: 22.2mm (7/8″), 25.4mm (1″), 31.8mm (1-1/4″), 35mm

Weight: 97 grams

Included in the box: Out Front Bike Mount, 4x sizing collars, 1x GoPro accessory mount and screw, 1x thumbscrew (for flip-to-film functionality), and 1x Hex wrench

If you use your phone for navigation, as an on-bike video camera, or want it easily accessible, Peak Design’s bike mount is AMAZING. I loved it from when they first launched it in 2020, and the recent improvements in version 2 made it that much better. The magnetic locking system is so secure you’ll see a bike lifted by the phone attached to the mount in the video.

I’ve used the Peak Design mount on gnarly gravel and road rides without worrying about my phone getting knocked loose. In fact, people always ask me which phone mount I’d recommend, and without hesitation, I say Peak Design.

Enhanced Features and User Experience

The V2 version introduces several upgrades, including a wider platform, the release lever design (still one-handed), a thumbscrew to reposition for video, a GoPro-type accessory mount for light or an action camera underneath, and sizing collars to accommodate different handlebar widths.

Out of the box, I could tell the product designers made the mounting platform larger. I had no issues with the original size, but as phones get larger, my hunch is the platform followed. Two release levers are still on either side of the mount for easy one-handed phone removal, even with gloves. I like easy access to my phone when trail riding so as not to miss capturing wildlife or those quickly fleeting images. This phone mount allows for that.

The addition of a thumbscrew on V2 lets you rotate the mount for videos.

I often take video action shots of our group riding down the trail. The new thumbscrew design allows for rotation of the mount on the bar, so the phone can be used as a video camera, shooting either the action out front or POV.

Versatile Mounting Options

Use the mount out front or flip it to position the phone over the stem, leaving room for a bike computer. Either way, the phone can be mounted in landscape or portrait. If choosing the out front positioning, save cockpit space using the accessory mount to attach an action camera (e.g., GoPro) or a light.

The Out Front Bike Mount comes with four sets of sizing collars, fitting a wide range of handlebar sizes for road, MTB, gravel bikes, and most eBikes. It fits bar widths 22.2mm (7/8″), 25.4mm (1″), 31.8mm (1-1/4″), and 35 mm (1- 3/8″).

Note: To use the Out Front Bike Mount, you need a Peak Design phone case or Universal Adapter. It is not compatible with tapered handlebars or bars that aren’t round.

Everyday Phone Case

4 stars

Price: $49.95

Colors: Charcoal, Midnight, Sage, Sun, Redwood

Weight: 41 grams (iPhone 14)

This great slim profile case is virtually identical to the one I tested as part of the 2020 Kickstarter campaign. You can read my review of the case here. It now comes in five colors, works with a cordless charger, and is compatible with additional phone models.

Since my initial testing in 2020, I’ve upgraded to an iPhone 14 with an aftermarket screen protector. For this round of testing, I removed my current case and installed the Everyday Phone Case. Unfortunately, it started pulling the screen protector off the phone at the corner. I shared this feedback with the company’s product team when I stopped by their booth at CABDA and Sea Otter, so hopefully, they can tweak the case to accommodate a third-party screen protector better. A great workaround is to use Peak Design’s Universal Adapter on my current case, which still makes it compatible with all their accessories.

Mobile Tripod

5 stars

Price: $79.95

Weight: 54 grams

The Mobile Tripod has become one of my favorite Peak Design accessories besides the bike mount. It’s perfect for capturing photos and videos while out on a trail biking or during a hike. Forget about balancing your phone against a tree or a water bottle; this sturdy little tripod uses magnets to securely attach to a phone case, allowing it to position it in landscape or portrait. Plus, its swivel ball mount lets you rotate the phone to capture a shot from the ideal angle.

The tripod works with any MagSafe-compatible iPhone or iPhone case. Watch a full demo video here. And a heads-up: the team at Peak Design has a great sense of humor, so be prepared for some witty and sarcastic commentary throughout the demo!

Stand Wallet

4.5 stars

Price: $59.95

Weight: 78 grams

Colors: Charcoal, Midnight, Sage, Sun, Redwood

Leave your bulky wallet behind when biking or on the go. Consolidate up to seven credit cards into this minimalistic case. The Stand Wallet incorporates a fully adjustable kickstand, allowing you to prop up the phone in portrait or landscape when FaceTiming or viewing a video. You’ll need a Peak Design case or a MagSafe® phone/case to connect the wallet. View a demo video here.
