Step into any local bike shop that stocks ASSOS apparel, and the racks are a sea of black. But that all changed in February with the launch of their new DYORA R line of jerseys and bibs, which includes new color options and an entry-level price point!
It’s been over a decade since I last wore ASSOS gear, so I was apprehensive when the rep offered a test kit. The Swiss brand has a reputation for running extremely small, but after consulting the updated online sizing chart, it was clear they’ve made adjustments to cater to a wider range of body types. Being between sizes, I opted for an XL in the jersey and bibs since the racer cut design is next to skin compressive.
The DYORA R jersey comes in five colorways for women and six for men. I tested the Stella Lavender hue. The fabric is an ultralight summer AirCell fabric that is extremely soft, breathable, and cooling. A full-length zipper also helps with regulating temperature. The body-hugging racer fit supports your muscles and enhances aerodynamics. A rear elastic hem with silicone microdot grippers ensures the jersey stays in place. There are three rear pockets for storage; the middle pocket is the only location on the jersey you’ll find the company’s logo. One drawback for me was the sleeve cuffs felt restrictive, though I don’t have particularly big arms.

Race in it. Train in it.
I found the overall fit of the bibs to be really comfortable, especially with the longer inseam, compressive fabric, and raw-edge leg bands with silicon grippers. The fabric is next to skin silky-smooth, has an abrasion-resistant texture, and is quick drying. An X-frame bib strap design adds to the comfort of keeping everything in place, even when riding in the drops.

While very comfortable, I’m not a big fan of the zeroPressure waist designed to reduce pressure in aggressive riding positions. Being six feet tall, the waist lands below my belly button and a few inches below my waist. Typically, when wearing bibs, I never experience pressure around the midsection, which holds true for the DYORA R bibs. However, I would have preferred the waistline to be at least 2” higher than where it currently hits my waist.

Since the jersey and bib shorts are summer weight, I conducted my test rides on the trainer, with the exception. I did ride outdoors with tights worn over the bibs. My longest trainer test ride was 2.5 hours, and I had zero discomfort. ASSOS uses a patented, three-layer, perforated foam that increases breathability and reduces excess weight. Its thermoformed shaping reduces ridges and irritation, while new cutouts on the side reduce volume and friction throughout the pedal stroke. Lastly, the chamois is attached at the front and rear with floating sides and center, allowing it to move with your body rather than against it.
Complete the Kit with Socks
ASSOS included two pairs of black R Socks S9 as part of the press kit. These socks are designed for warm summer rides like the new DYORA R kits. With an 8” cuff, the socks are made from highly breathable and supportive fabric. Available in black or white, there are no exposed seams to minimize chaffing. My feet stayed dry and cool while testing the socks on several long trainer rides.
