Turning a Cycling Passion into a Successful Business

You rarely find a bike shop that is women-owned, but even more unlikely that it is women-run. Kate and Danielle are breaking the mold by running not only Brown County Bikes, a very successful bike shop in Nashville Indiana, but also DNK Presents which is an outdoor adventure business.

The shop is located just outside of Brown County State Park, a mecca for mountain bikers, hikers, and campers. By being a women-run shop, they remove the intimidation factor when a woman, family, or even a newbie rider walks into the store. It’s been my experience, women just tend to be more approachable and non-judgemental than most men. Customers find it easier to discuss topics like chamois or chamois cream as well as sports bras and saddle selection.

Kate and Danielle know much more than chamois and sports bras. They know bikes. Not only the technical aspects but they are also certified mountain bike instructors. I visited Brown County twice last year, once in May to ride and then again in September for a DNK Presents women’s MTB camp. I came away from both experiences with greater confidence as a mountain biker and a better rider.

I sat down with Kate and Danielle to discuss a variety of topics including the success of Brown County Bikes, advice for women wanting to start their own business, and how they juggle two businesses and a family.

When asked about advice to women wanting to open their own business Kate said, “visualize your dream, and the only thing stopping you is yourself. Never let anyone say you can’t do something. Do what you do and do it well. Stay true to yourself.” That is indeed very sound advice.

It does my heart good to see two women so empowered and in turn empowering other women. I’m so grateful cycling has brought us together and I truly celebrate their success.

Enjoy the Ride.
